The race began with a beat up to the Voose mark against a light breeze, coming down the River. The special course, set by Officer of the Day, David Harford, then took the fleet back down the River to the movable buoy near the river mouth. The photograph shows some of the yachts using their spinnakers to run before the breeze on this leg of the race. The yachts were able to use spinnakers for the next leg to the Shag mark, by which time Jacobi had established a useful lead, followed by the three J92s, Jetta, Forza! and Jabadeo. The spinnaker run continued to the Rosemullion mark, with the order of the leading four boats unchanged, followed by Demolition and Magic Bus. The boats beat back into the river for the remaining section of the race, where the improving Demolition finished very fast. She sailed into second place in the PY handicap, actually beating Jacobi into second place in the IRC handicap system.
