A course of about five nautical miles was set for the race on 5th July, which kept the eleven yachts in the Helford River, except for a couple of visits to the Shag mark, just off Mawnan. In a light breeze, mainly from the west, Jacobi, Demolition and Forza! got off to a good start up river towards the Voose mark.
The fleet then sailed back down the River towards the Shag mark using spinnakers. The photograph shows how the J boats like Jetta, with asymmetric spinnakers, have to sail downwind by gybing from side to side. This gives the appearance that they are on a completely different heading to the rest of the fleet.

Unfortunately, after leading the race Jacobi had to retire, and Forza!, lying second at the time, was confused by seeing Jacobi's sails lowered, and lost some of their hard earned advantage by sailing back to a previous mark, thinking that Jacobi had finished.

Half way through the Mid Summer Race Series, Magic Bus leads, followed by Demolition, with Jacobi and Jetta equal in third place.

It was good to see Anthony Jenkin's Fleeting Feeling join the fleet for her first race of the season, finishing in fourth place. Chablis, the Sadler 25, skippered by Mark Buckler, was another welcome addition to the fleet.
