There was so little breeze that the wind turbines on Goonhilly were standing still, so Race Officer Roly Kirby set a course mainly within the Helford River. Six yachts lined up to start for the windward mark, which had been set due East of the Committee boat. Jabadeo and Big Purple headed slowly but steadily towards the South shore, while the other four boats drifted gently towards the North shore. Jetta then tacked finding a little more breeze, but Jinjy decided to retire from the race. The Committee boat moved up to the windward mark to ensure that there would at least be a result, even from just one leg.. The air was almost still as Jabadeo on port tack, and Big Purple on starboard tack, headed in towards each other and the buoy. As the two boats came close Jabadeo tried to give way by tacking, but without enough speed to complete the tack she seemed to come to a standstill, head to wind. Big Purple then tried to avoid the slow moving side-to-side collision, but without success, although no damage was done. The Race Officer signalled that the race would end at the windward mark, and Big Purple soon crossed the line to win the race. Jabadeo meanwhile had to serve a penalty by completing a 720 degree turn, for failing to give way. Jetta was on the lay line coming in on a starboard tack, and as Jabadeo and Jetta reached the buoy Jetta had a fraction more speed, and was able to steal second place by four seconds on corrected time, with Jabadeo third.
