The boats started the race tightly bunched, on a short start line between
the committee boat and the Toll mark, but skilful helming avoided any
possible collisions. The first beat took the fleet of eleven starters
up to the Voose mark where Jetta had some problems launching their spinnaker.
The yachts then headed out of the River with spinnakers hoisted, towards
the Rosemullion mark in Falmouth Bay. Many skippers were glad of a chance
to visit one of the Bay marks after the majority of races being restricted
to marks around the River mouth. Jacobi got well away from the rest of
the fleet for the third week in a row, to win both the PY and IRC sections.
Big Purple again kept close to the leaders, coming second in the IRC section.
Forza! and Jetta, two of the J92s, were in close contention for most of
the race, with Forza! just getting past on the final leg up the River
towards Trebah Beach to take second place in the PY section. Magic Bus
managed to hold off Demolition for most of the race too, but on the final
leg Demolition's greater sail area proved decisive. With three wins out
of the first three races Jacobi looks set to win the Late Summer Series,
and could clinch it for certain with one more good result. The race for
the runners-up spot is still wide open, with the second half of the series
still to be decided in the next three weeks.
