On a fine evening with a good northerly breeze, Race Officer Ian Wort decided to send the five yachts out of the River for a beat to the Maenporth mark, off Maenporth beach. By the time the boats came back from Maenporth flying spinnakers to the Dennis mark, Big Purple had established a lead, with Jetta and Jabadeo competing with each other not far behind, and Origo and Demolition further back. The next leg took the fleet back across the river mouth where the shelter of the cliffs at the Shag mark made for a difficult rounding with light and fickle breezes. Once clear of the wind shadow, spinnakers were hoisted as the fleet headed off towards Nare Point. Jetta kept out to sea before gybing for the Nare mark while Jababdeo chose a course nearer to the entrance to Gillan Creek, but Jetta managed to round first of the J92s. Demolition and Origo seemed to have closed the gap on the faster boats, and it began to look as if a close finish was in store. With the breeze dying a little, Jabadeo changed foresail to their number one, in an effort to catch Jetta. Once more to the Dennis mark, then a beat back to the tricky rounding at Shag, and the fleet headed back up the River for the finish off Trebah Beach. Big Purple was first across the line followed by Jetta and Jabadeo. Jabadeo's larger foresail proved an advantage, as they approached the line, slowly catching Jetta, but Jetta, helmed by Tom Smith, just held on, to finish seven seconds ahead of Jabadeo after ninety minutes of racing. When the handicaps were applied to the results there was a win for Stuart Sawyer's Origo, with Big Purple second and Demolition third.
