A light westerly breeze and a strong ebbing tide made for an interesting, if frustrating race, in the warm evening sunshine. The fleet welcomed Chablis and Shenanigan 11, both of which joined a race for the first time this season to make eleven starters. The first leg to windward took the boats up river towards the narrows, with Shere Khan and Jinjy leading the way. Chablis worked her way up through the boats moored along the North shore. Spinnakers were hoisted at the windward mark, and Shere Khan led a series of short legs in the river with the J boats gybing their colourful spinnakers from side to side. The yachts then headed out of the river towards the Shag and Rosemullion marks, still able to fly their kites, and the fleet bunched up as the leading boats found lighter winds in the bay. Jacobi was first to round the Rosemullion mark followed not far behind by Big Purple, Shenanigan, Jetta, Shere Khan, Jinjy, and Origo. Heading back towards the Helford River skippers had to choose between a good breeze out to sea or a light breeze close to the cliffs, with a calm area between. Shenanigan went well choosing the seaward route, but then slowed as she hit the quiet zone. Jabadeo also chose the seaward breeze and was seen apparently heading off to France in search of wind. She did find a good breeze and began catching the landward boats before hitting the dead patch again. With the strongly ebbing tide and dying breeze skippers began to look at their watches to wonder if they would reach the next mark before the 8:30pm deadline for the first boat to finish. The leading boats at the stage were Jacobi, Shenanigan, Big Purple, Shere Khan and Jetta, but sadly as the 8:30 deadline passed by, skippers began to start their engines and drop their sails. So the race ended with no result, because no boat was able to get to the next mark in time. Jetta, unable to start her engine, needed a tow back to her mooring and Jacobi obliged against the strong ebbing tide. Despite the disappointment of having no finish the skippers and their crews enjoyed a fine evening's sailing in gentle conditions. It looks as if the Early Summer Series, IRC and PY, has been won by Jacobi, with Big Purple second and Jetta third, but this has yet to be officially confirmed. The series has been one of contrasting conditions, either near gale with torn sails and broken tackle, or very light airs with boats struggling to move against the tide. |
