As crews boarded their boats, heavy bursts of rain swept across the Helford River. The southerly wind was deceptively light near the moorings, but as the yachts headed down to the start there was more breeze, and looking out to sea some wave action could be seen beyond Nare Point. The J92 Forza! of Andy Dennis was welcomed back for her first race of this season. The race was started by Wally Royal, as Officer of the Day, assisted by Ian Wort, and the fleet of eight boats all started at 18.30. Jacobi soon forged ahead of Jetta and Big Purple as the fleet headed for the Dennis mark, At the mark Jetta had problems securing her spinnaker, allowing Big Purple and Jabadeo to get by, as the fleet went down wind to the Rosemullion mark. Origo was handicapped by not being able to use her spinnaker, but Jinjy, Jabadeo, Shere Khan and Forza! all used spinnakers in the lively breeze. On the beat in towards Porthallow boats began to feel the full force of the wind and Jacobi was heeled well over in the gusts, as pulses of rain came through. The spinnaker leg down to the Shag mark had the boat speed going from 7 to 11 knots on Jetta, as she surfed down the swell, but she could not gain on Big Purple which rounded the Shag mark not too far behind Jacobi. There were light winds under the shelter of the cliff at the next Dennis mark, but once out into the centre of the river again, there was a good breeze for the reach back up to the finish off Trebah Beach. Big Purple managed to stay in touch with Jacobi all the way, and at the finish Big Purple was ahead by two minutes on corrected time, winning the Dorothy Winfrey cup.
